Cesar Chavez Day! March 31, 2017

#JustPreachin

“Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” – Cesar Chavez

#SomethingToSay

When something is wrong, you can’t remain quiet. We have grown complacent, and this has lead to living a stagnant existence. Protest. March. Strike. Boycott (big one these days). “I do that!” you shout, but too often you do it half assed. You want to make a different, you need to organize and then stick with it. Personally, I am not 100% convinced in the peaceful protest success rates, but I respect and admire those like Cesar Chavez. Perhaps if the world had more like him, the concept of non-violent protest to make lasting change would work.

#DeaconBluesAppoved

This section will be switched next week with the SomethingToSay section. Bringing the weekly events to the top of the blog, for those just want to silence my rants. 

I also need to point out… if you don’t promote your shows, no matter if you are performer or venue, then neither will I. You need to get word out faster. Giving a one or two day notice of a show is not acceptable. Personally, if you are a venue you need to be on top of event creation and as a performer you really need to help them spread the word too.

#JustPreachin

“Do you know that being a stranger is the hardest thing that can happen to any one in all this world?” ― Gene Stratton-Porter

#SomethingToSay

Exlusion. It can be a painful thing.. ok.. it IS a painful thing. No matter what the reason, it hurts the person being excluded.
If you don’t like someone, and that is why they are excluded then be honest and say so. If it is a private matter that you would rather not share with someone, be honest and say that. Just being honest and communicate with one another.

Excluding someone however based on race, age, gender, orientation, etc. Is just wrong. It doesn’t matter if you think it justified, it makes no sense. We have all experienced this pain and awkwardness. A pain that could be made more acceptable if we knew why we were on the outside looking in instead of wondering what it is we did wrong to be there. Problem is, I think most of these situations are based on a bias of some sort.

We all know the feeling, or have at least once. Being more sensitive to it, I do my best every day never to exclude someone based on a bias of ignorance. I care not of the colour of your skin, your gender, your religion, your sexual preferences… I make it a point to include regardless wherever and whenever I can. Although at times I am guilty of just excluding everyone!

Really Once I get used to having to eat with two people instead of one. Two people who have known each other for such a long time that they practically speak in code. #SomethingToSay

Yesterday was a long day and was rather unexpected. Spent hours in emergency with my son. All is fine, it was a severe panic attack. However it is better to be safe than sorry. Did manage to make a short appearance at the Happy Rock Open Jam last night, sorry I could not stay longer. It was great running into old friend, and Canadian legend Sonny Del Rio.

Regardless of the days that have lead up to this, it is St Patrick’s Day. Not gonna get into the debate of the meaning of the holiday or anything like that. Just want to encourage everyone to have fun today, be smart and safe, and be sure to try your luck but don’t push it.

Lips Appreciation Day – 03/16/2017

#JustPreachin

“Kiss someone like kissing is the only way you have to communicate. There is no conversation. There is no sex. There are only two sets of lips that are ravenous to be recognized and treasured.” – Roberto Hogue

#SomethingToSay

If the eyes are a window to the soul, then what does a person’s lips tell us? Yes, it really is Lips Appreciation Day. You can tell a lot from a smile, smirk, frown, laugh, and even the way the mouth forms words being spoken. However, the greatest appreciation comes when observing the lips of another, one you find catches your attention more than others.

These days, I think we have lost the subtle appreciation of important intimacies. I am as guilty as the rest. What ever happened the importance of a hug, a handshake, the touch from another, a kiss of respect, a kiss of passion, holding hands… it seems the visible extension of human connection is beginning to fade away.
On a day like today… make that connection clear. Appreciate.

#SomethingToSay

There is a war going on. Performers vs Venues. It’s an age old war.

I firmly support both, so long as BOTH support each other. Times have changed for the bar owner. The no smoking really killed the scene, the ZERO tolerance for alchohol and driving (not saying that is a bad thing, but you can NOT even have one), the economy, and the community.

A bar needs to advertise and promote. Period. Poster, flyers, radio, newspapers, etc. Whatever they can and they don’t always have to spend a lot of money. They also need to be consistant and when they decide to host entertainment, you have to give it some time. Customer service needs to be a constant form of advertising. This will keep people coming back and will keep them coming back with friends.

Bands also need to promote. They need to understand that the masses in general just don’t come and hang out at the bars like they used to. Mostly for the reasons above. You can’t take a spot in the bustling downtown core and compare it to other places with far fewer people in the area. Yes, because of the economy and driving issues, you are really relying on LOCALS.

The real power though is in the hands of YOU, and ME, and YOU, and YOU! I just read a comment of a person who claims to support local bands. “I eat at home before I go out. I pre-drink before I go out because I’m not paying $5 a beer. I support the band and want to enjoy the music, so I am willing to pay for a ticket or a cover.” blah blah blah. How many of you are like this? Let me spell it out… if most bars in this city, or any city, only had Cover Charge events… nobody would go there… ever. Don’t get me wrong, I am willing to pay to see any band, especially knowing the cover goes straight to the band. What does the bar get out of that? “They sell beer and food!” you shout… read the comment above. Really? Yes, our economy has an impact that people don’t have money to spend.. or so they say. I go to a downtown bar and watch people drop $100+. $5 is a good price overall but you know that a business to be successful should have a 300% mark-up. 33% inventory, 33% overhead, and 33% profit. Is that not the point of being self-employed? You have to make a living. I have seen it where a bar owner pays the inventory, pays the overhead, and makes no money for surviving and making a living. Been there and done that. I’ve personally had nights where the amount I paid the entertainment was more than 50% of my total sales in the day. Still paid them but can you see the problem? If people are not willing to spend a little money (on top of a cover) then you are not supporting the Local Scene. Period. If a bar spends $500 on the entertainment, you know they need to make more than $1500 in sales? Why more? Because the entertainment is only a part of the cost of overhead… just something to think about.
