I suffer from an Anxiety Disorder, my ex suffers from an Anxiety Disorder, my son suffers severely from an Anxiety Disorder. I know a few out there, especially a few in my close circle, who also suffer the same. I’m sure we can all tell you how many times we have heard, “Everyone gets anxiety, you just have to deal with it and move on.” Depression… much the same.
People need to realize and understand that the Anxiety cause by a disorder is not the same as normal anxiety. Anxiety is normally a good thing, a normal reaction to a stressful situation. Perhaps an upcoming test, meeting someone for the first time, etc. The feeling causes us to be cautious and prepare during these events. With a disorder, this anxiety becomes intense and excessive, often causing debilitating effects.
Those of us with a disorder and anxious nearly all the time, although if can come and go in varying degrees. It can be hard to even get through the day and making even the most basic decisions or completing simple tasks can be impossible. Paying the bills, making a phone call, answering the door, cooking, etc. These can paralyze us in fear or even trigger a panic attack. How about dizziness, sweating, trembling, headaches, nausea, unable to breathe, trouble speaking, or frequent bladder issues. Ever feel like your completely out of the loop and not part of everyone elses world because you can’t just go outside for a walk? Unable to focus or concentrate, racing thoughts, and negativity. Yes, there could also be underlying depression, but many negative thoughts can also be a symptom of an Anxiety Disorder.
This, along with many other disorders, are an invisible disability. You would not tell a paraplegic to stop being lazy and get off their ass… would you? Today you need to check yourself. If you are feeling any of these things, talk to your doctor. If you know someone who is dealing with these things, support them at their own pace. DO NOT try and force them into seeking help, but don’t be afraid to talk to your own doctor about your friend and seek their advice. Often times, just listening and having a supportive conversation can make the world of difference.
